NYE 2009 clubbing guide: Berlin

- If it's a marathon house and techno session you're after this New Year's Eve, Berlin is arguably the place that you'll want to be.
- While Berlin may be a mecca for clubbing all year round, it's over the course of the New Year's period where it really comes into its own. With a packed diary of events spanning from Wednesday through to Sunday, there are few places that match it if an extended session is your cup of tea this year. Those wanting to start early on December 30th have two choices: It's either off to Tresor for Oliver Koletzki and Franklin De Costa in the Globus room, or catch mischievous minimalists Italoboyz take over Watergate with the assistance of Alexkid and Hello?Repeat co-founder Daze Maxim. If you can wait just one more day, the Spree-side club will have a much more action packed line-up, with Tiefschwarz, My My, Kiki, Zander VT, Livio & Roby and Luna City Express all set to appear. Elsewhere on New Year's Eve, Ostfunk's party in the unused metro station on Potzdamer Platz sees performances from Marc Romboy, Stephan Bodzin, Thomas Schumacher and Jens Bond, Mr. Flash brings the electro-house to Icon, Till von Sein and Ronan Fitzgerald will be getting down at the intimate Kleine Reise space in Kreuzberg, and Blake Baxter, Mike Dehnert, Dirt Crew and Alexander Kowalski will bring in 2010 at Tresor. Over by the Ostbahnhof station, Move D, Thomas Fehlmann, Gudrun Gut, T. Raumschmiere and Karaoke Kalk boss Strobocop will be celebrating at Maria am Ostbahnhof, while the Berghain will be hosting a residents' special spread out over the main floor, Panorama Bar and the Lab.oratory. With any other club, this might not be much of a draw, but when you've got Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, Norman Nodge, Marcel Fengler, Fiedel, Len Faki, André Galluzzi, Luke Slater, Steffi, Tama Sumo, Nick Höppner, nd_baumecker, Boris and Prosumer on your books, you can be sure that they won't have much of a problem filling the club. Dinky, Margaret Dygas, 2000 and One and Shinedoe will also make appearances in Panorama Bar. Weekend have yet to reveal their line-up, so make sure to check their RA club page closer to the time. Of course, many of these clubs will be going on well into New Year's Day, but if you fancy a change of location, Arenaclub will open their afterhours at 6 AM, with Marek Hemmann, Catz N Dogz and Ruede Hagelstein offering a diet of minimal and tech-house. Tobi Neumann, Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts, SIS, Mike Shannon and Pan-Pot will all play at Watergate later that evening, but if you're after something different to the ubiquitous mix of house and techno that you'll find in the city, Solid Steel will be offering up a night of eclectic turntablism from DJ Vadim, Yarah Bravo and local lads Jazzanova at Icon. This is Berlin, of course, so the party certainly doesn't stop there. Saturday January 2nd will see dubby techno don Marko Fürstenberg play live at Horst, Mike Huckaby will house it up Detroit style at Tresor's Globus, while those looking for some authentic Detroit techno should check out Octave One's live show at Suicide Circus. Both Function and Regis will represent the austere techno of their Sandwell District label at the latter event, while Chicago house will surprisingly be the theme at the Berghain. Snuff Crew and Neville Watson are set to lay down their finest jack tracks alongside Mojuba boss Don Williams on the main floor, but seeing as the Panorama Bar will be closed for refurbishment, the Lab.oratory will be open once more, with Daniel Wang, I-F and Jeffrey Sfire no doubt offering up a soundtrack of disco, Italo and electro. Revellers looking for something a bit more contemporary should head to Watergate, where Ellen Allien, Heidi, Sascha Funke, DJ T. and Efdemin will all be strutting their stuff behind the decks.
