- Macro's next LP is a toolkit full of polyrhythmic locked grooves.
Berlin-based artist Stefan Goldmann will release a vinyl double-pack called The Grand Hemiola at the end of March.
Half of the album is an experiment in locked grooves and polyrhythm: one record is packed with loops in a 4/4 time signature, the other with loops in 3/4. This makes for some interesting possibilities behind the decks. Frankly it's all a bit over our heads, but a press release explains it like this: "In the mix, they sum up to an extended cycle of 3x 4/4 or 4x 3/4, and enable building complex '3 over 4' polyrhythms ('Hemiolas'). You can mix loop into loop for hours without ever getting trapped." So there you have it. The album packs in a staggering 144 loops in all, plus six non-locked groove tracks, all of which feature more off-kilter beats, sometimes joined with modern classical arrangements. The album will see release via Macro, the label Goldmann runs with Finn Johannsen.
