Long-running Detroit venue The Works is being kicked out of its current location.
This weekend, the Corktown-area nightclub started a GoFundMe page, revealing that the building had been purchased by a new owner who refused to renew their lease.
"As with the recent fate of many small businesses in Detroit, The Works is being forced out of their property that they have been renting for 20 years," the club said in a statement on its GoFundMe page. "Our previous landlord sold the building in a very fast deal, giving us a very short notice. The new landlord will unfortunately not give us a lease. We hate to ask, but we need help. We need money to help us move to our new location."
As the Detroit Metro Times reports, a new location has been purchased, but it "still has a long way to go" in terms of being ready. The venue hopes to raise $50,000 to build infrastructure like a sprinkler system, water connection, elevators and exhaust hoods for a kitchen in the new location.
"We were working slow until we found out the building was sold and was told the landlord was going to work with us until our licenses have been transferred," The Works owner Tammy Wilcox-Steelman told the Times. "We are working as fast and hard as possible to get out of there ASAP."
The Works has long been one of the Metro City's premiere dance music venues, and becomes a hub for activity during Movement festival each Memorial Day weekend. Its forced move comes on the back of increasing gentrification in the Corktown neighbourhood.
