  • Sónar's flagship festival in Barcelona will celebrate 30 years in 2023. The first 66 acts have been confirmed for the anniversary edition, which will take place from June 15th through 17th. Highlights include Honey Dijon, Ryoji Ikeda, Fever Ray, Laurent Garnier, Bicep (who will play live), Oneohtrix Point Never, Koreless, 700 BLISS, BADSISTA back-to-back Cashu, Manuka Honey, Bored Lord, Deena Abdelwahed, Anz, ISAbella back-to-back Roza Terenzi, Call Super back-to-back Sedef Adasi and MikeQ. "The festival marks its 30th anniversary with an entirely electronic lineup that celebrates club culture, the role of the DJ as a cultural symbol of our time and the diversity of sounds at the heart of today's electronic music scene," said Sónar's co-director Enric Palau. Sónar's creative discourse programme, Sónar+D, will also return in 2023, offering masterclasses, demonstrations, lectures and more. The programme's focus will be on innovation in music (June 15th) and the intersections of art, technology, science and society (June 16th). The festival's warped visual identity, created specifically for the anniversary, was built using AI, which was tasked with processing 30 years of visual campaigns. "In seeking to acquire the ability to generate images that could fit into each of these campaigns, the AI trains itself and generates a multitude of trial-and-error results," said co-director Sergio Caballero. "It's in the beauty of these errors that Sónar has found the image for its 30th anniversary." Find the lineup so far in the listing below, and revisit our review of Sónar 2022.
Update, December 1st: This piece has been updated to include a mention of Sónar's new, AI-generated visual identity.
