- Launched by DVS1 in 2022, the company shared over $422,000 of earnings with more than 27,000 producers.
Aslice is closing.
The revenue-sharing platform broke the news in a statement published today, September 3rd. The team thanked the "friends, DJs, producers, partners and advisors" for showing that "a better future is possible through collective action."
Launched by DVS1 in 2022, Aslice operated a donation-based system where DJs pledged a percentage of their gig fee to the producers whose music they played. Across two years, the service gathered around 7,400 playlists from 935 DJs, who collectively shared over $422,000 of their earnings with more than 27,000 producers worldwide.
As part of the closing process, Aslice underwent an external review courtesy of data analysis firm Audience Strategies. The resulting report, "A Slice Of Fairness", "proved that you don't need deep pockets or a huge team to change the world," according to Audience Strategies' David Boyle. "They've set a new benchmark for fairness and respect. Their impact will echo for years to come. Now, it's up to the industry to build on the foundation they laid. The question now is: who will pick up the torch?"
The report also highlighted the "financial sustainability challenges" that ultimately led to Aslice's closure. The annual operational costs amounted to roughly $250,000, while the platform made just $63,000 during its time in business.
