Maxi Mill - Lost And Found / Speed Balance Weight

  • The tutelage of Tom Trago appears to be serving Maxim "Maxi Mill" Yesodharan well. His latest outing for Trago's Rush Hour offshoot, Voyage Direct, is Yesodharan's finest work yet—two atmospheric house cuts that put a premium on yawning basslines, scintillating drum programming and space. Yesodharan was a chef in a former life, and it's tempting to suggest that he's applied the skill of balancing ingredients to his production work. "Lost And Found" floats into view with the pitter-patter of toms, before Yesodharan lets rip with heavy snares and floods the track with roaring bass. In tempo and mood it's a close cousin of Maxxi Soundsystem's "Regrets We Have No Use For." The pace steps up on "Speed Balance Weight," with ripping vocal stabs accompanied by menacing techno synths, jazzy licks and percussion that lands with a woody thwack. It's the sound of a producer moving up in status, but not being overawed by it.
