Sparky - Portland (Tuff City Kids Remixes)

  • A charming electro jam recorded in 1998 by Glasgow music legend Dave Clark, which was originally released in 2002 on the Numbers crew's Stuffrecords, "Portland" has slowly developed a second life. A perennial in the sets of DJs such as Andrew Weatherall and Ricardo Villalobos, it was reissued by Numbers last year alongside an extraordinary pair of remixes by Villalobos. These two reworks by Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer in their Tuff City Kids guise take "Portland" off in a couple of entirely new directions. The "Looney Mix" is a floor-slaying mix of tough breakbeats and raw acid flourishes that retains certain structural similarities to the original despite its radically different ingredients. In contrast, the "TB Mix" sounds nothing like the original. A euphoric house cut, it pairs dreamy keys and pads with looping voice fragments and gentle little acid details. It doesn't pack quite the same punch as the A-Side, but it's yet another enjoyable take on a wonderful underground hit.
