- Sparse dub mutations from DJ Fett Burger and Porn Sword Tobacco.
- Sometime last year, DJ Fett Burger and Henrik Jonsson, AKA Porn Sword Tobacco, met in Jonsson's studio in Berlin. They recorded six tracks, each in one take, edited only for length later on. This is standard practice for these two and their friends, a strange gaggle of artists running and releasing music on labels like Acido, SUED and the many Sex Tags imprints. The result of this particular session was Live At Pstudion 2018, an EP of dub mutations on Recording, the label Jonsson runs with SUED cofounder SVN.
Recording's output so far has weaved between spartan house and slower, more dub- and hip-hop-inspired beats. Live At Pstudion 2018 is all about the latter. The drum patterns are technically slo-mo house (you'll want to play them at 45 RPM, despite the label's instructions), but the overall effect is pure dub: fat, sparse, pleasantly heat-stroked, delivered in just a few channels of analog signal.
The three beat tracks—"TR Skyline Outlines," "Tune Off, Drop Aside, Twist Out," and "Vi Checkar Svenskeknappen" ("We check the Swedish button")—are vast domes of sound anchored to plodding grooves, their atmospheres both alien and tropical, with warbling synths over ultra-crisp drums. There are three ambient tracks, too, and they really hold their own. On "Nightdreams," snatches of sound drift around your head like flickering lights, creating a weirdly pleasant seeing-stars sensation. The combo of trippy ambience and slow-rolling grooves makes the record addictive, one you can easily listen to a few times in a row.
