- Zarya is the Tomsk-born duo of singer-songwriter Tatyana Pronkina and sound designer Kirill Chernov. Pronkina has previously released a solo track on Masterskaya, an adventurous label run by the Ukrainian pop icon Ivan Dorn, and was a resident at Parallel, an organisation that aims to battle gender inequality in Russia's electronic music scene. The duo is inspired by the likes of Charlie XCX and SOPHIE, as well as Shygirl and Sega Bodega, who also make their most extravagant work together. On Synthetic World, "Cold Metal" is the highlight—it had me mumbling the lines after the very first listen. But even without understanding Russian, Pronkina's icy vocals translate the EP's melancholic message of wanting to escape one's real self.
