This compilation features 8 different artists or groups, hence the name 8 Fold. Coming off Sydney based electronic-jazz label Jazzgroove. Taking three years to make, this CD was produced by local artist and nurtured by label head Gerard Masters. Jazzgroove mission was to give an accurate blend of all things coming off the label, fusing jazz and live elements giving exposure to many talented artists at once and creating a listenable mix ending in a show of colleagues who have a similar intent.
Flowing analogue synth in Kid Zen's Reservoir Cats gives a smooth intro backed up by a broken but somehow smooth beat with digital bleeps and breaks sifting throughout. Sonny Remix starts off with a dub vocal sample that has a kicking double bass line through live drums and lush 'n' easy saxamaphone. End & Means bring On the low feat. Hyjak and Kye, Traveling the hip hop road, with Hyjaks trademark lyrics “I hear hip hop’s really blowing up this year so why are why always scabbing bucks for beer?” Churns out some head nodding bass riffs, snare hits and smooth vocal interludes, pushing the live feel and making the most of having a funk/jazz band at your side. A great live outfit with their self-titled release earlier this year which is also well worth a look. Nicholas McBride cooks up his Square Pancakes a laidback groove with other ingredients of bass with a squelchy fat synths and a dash piano making it fit for the pan. Wrapping up the album is Victim Of Destiny a sharper edge, the last track seems to sum up the direction of the CD could of gone heading alternatively in an instrumental "live" feel that shines out towards the end of the CD.
8 fold consists of a compilation from the multi-talented Jazzgroove collective, exploring individual outfits who take electronic production and the use of computer technology in live jazz performance to the next level, while conserving that homegrown feel.
