- The latest release on Madam X's Kaizen label is primed for festival play.
- Ask a few people what kind of music Madam X plays and you'll probably get a different answer from everyone. Her Kaizen label, though, offers a good clue, and the latest release from London producer Debba is the kind of hybrid techno she's made her name on. The title track is both subtle and garguantan, with a broken beat and vocal chop skating over an ominous, sustain bassline like an air hockey puck being passed back and forth. (Bristol artist Pluralist offers a slightly twitchier remix that dices and spreads the vocals across the stereo spectrum.) "Feeling Closer" is another vocal-and-bassline killer, this time with a big Bicep-style drop and Overmono-esque swung rhythm—it's not terribly original, but it sounds like it was designed by an expert in a lab for maximum festival mayhem. "You And I" rounds off the EP with a darker, more melancholy spin on Debba's formula, cutting through some of the hype with a bassline as taut as an elastic band. If you can rely on Debba for one thing, it's a massive bassline
