- Nagging bass riff. Trippy effects. Rhythmic lockdown. Smooth enough to go through you like a beer and banana milkshake.
Yup it’s a Booka Shade record.
We all want to hate on those artists that are this utterly consistent. But I honestly don’t care if Booka Shade are formulaic or not because their music gives me such pleasure. (Incidentally I’m not going to bother explaining who Booka Shade are because anyone reading this website ought to know by now.)
In White Rooms is one of those tracks that is mathematically perfect at what it’s trying to do, like ‘Plastic Dreams’, ‘Halcyon’ or ‘Knights of the Jaguar’. This will be an anthem this year, if it isn’t already. The strident marching melody and the bass riff carry the song, slyly tweaking your nipples but never quite reaching the intensity of genital contact. But the track is so sweet and loving that even though there’s no explosive moment people will be dancing hard anyway. It doesn’t sound like much on first listen but you won’t be able to get it out of your head and any DJ playing anything from progressive to techno to electrohouse to minimal will get floors moving fiercely with this.
The original is the standout track on both the ‘Movements’ album and this single release. In Blue Rooms is a darker, more jacking rework that retains the spirit of the original and may be more suitable for harder, techier sets. The Elektrochemie remix adds a more compelling breakdown and more psychedelic effects, so DJs with more of an electro bent may prefer it, but I think it lacks that lovely sweetness giving me no strong reason to recommend it over the original.
Buy on sight, and play it before everyone else does.
