Conforce - Cruising EP

  • You may remember Conforce, AKA Boris Bunnik. RA was all atwitter about him a bit more than a year ago, inviting him to play at our Sonar party and heralding the arrival of new tracks on MySpace. We don't normally espouse such exuberance around these parts, but Bunnik's emotionally-driven deep techno is the sort of thing to get excited about. So we waited. And waited. And waited some more. (Apparently, Bunnik was finishing up school, hidden away in Leeuwarden, dreaming up new modes of hypnosis.) Thankfully, he returns here with this EP for Curle (and another in short order for Modelisme entitled CCCP) with the same sort of goods that he bestowed upon us the last time. Bunnik's music splits the difference between the slow ease of headfuck techno and the progressive instincts of more pop-orientated producers. Such is his knack for a hook, that it stands to reason if he used a different sound palette, he'd probably be much bigger than he is now. For those allergic to such things, though, rest assured that the long, gliding melody of "Predictable Coincidence" or the chiming, spacious washes of "Joyless Mind" don't approach cheesiness. Instead, they're the sort of remarkably assured riffs that rarely come from a producer so young. Considering he's now finished with school, hopefully we'll have plenty more in the near future to enjoy.
