- Those who know regard Roger Semsroth as quite a talent. Reportedly, Jeff Mills advised Tresor to sign him, and (previously) he appeared a whopping five times on Richie Hawtin's DE9 | Transitions. Those two names, however, epitomize a very distinct type of techno. And so does Ronan Point. It's dry, gritty minimal—nothing more or less, unaffectedly revelling in the texture of the loop. Dark, brooding Detroit style tracks are created from raw, distorted drum machines, with austere sonar bleeps offering little respite from the cold. Stylistically, they inhabit a Drexciyan realm of electro and techno that doesn't particularly adhere to either: there's a four to the floor kick on "Two," but a more freeform pounding is found everywhere else.
Ronan Point is basically four loops in this vein. Subtle changes can be found, but they're infrequent and beside the point. There's murky paranoia in "Three," positive notes on top of cement-mixer sub bass in "Four" and varied energy levels throughout, presenting enough diversity for the tracks to apply to varying hypothetical DJing scenarios. However, whether observing tradition on the ones and twos or layering in Live (they're well suited to either), the differences are of such a subtle nature that it's better left unanalysed, and the right one reeled out on the spur of the moment.
